Nov 26, 2008: Should I shave my head?
Q: Should I shave my head? What will I look like with a bald head?
A: If you're a guy, and don't have any huge scars, yes - go for it!
If you're still not sure, ask your barber/hair stylist. They'll know. Ask them if you've got a head that would look good shaved. Trust them- they looks at skulls all day long.
Q: What's a bald head feel like?
A: Feel your forehead. Hard & greasy, hu? A bald head is just like that, only all over.
Q: What's it fee like to have a shaved head?
A: Cold. Other observations in my previous post "11 Things I've Learned Since Shaving My Head"
You can also spot any breeze, and tell when it's raining faster than anyone else.
Q: How often should I shave my head?
A: Head hair grows roughly the same as facial hair. For a smooth head, daily shaving is a must. Scruffy stubble is manly too. I know guys who shave once a week. I generally shave every-other day.
Q: How do you properly shave a head?
A: I started with a cheap-o Bic razor. Got a ton of cuts. I was a bloody mess.
I then switched to an electric razor. Much safer & faster. I tend to prefer the Braun brand.
Most recently, I've discovered and become a huge fan of the HeadBlade. Yes, it looks like a toy- but it's by far the best & fastest way to shave a head. (And no, this isn't a paid endorsement!)
Q: Do bald people get dandruff?
A: There's differing opinions all over the Internet, so I'll thrown in mine. Consider the following:
-Dry skin is not dandruff. There isn't near the amount of skin flaking off. Yes, bald heads get dry skin. It's usually on the forehead and creeping up, depending on the cause of the dry skin.
-Dandruff (aka Pityriasis capitis) is usually caused by the fungus Malassezia globosa.
-Fungal infections are generally killed off by keeping the skin dry and exposed to sun & air (as opposed to dark, damp, and covered). Shaved heads do this quite well.
-I've never had, seen, met, or heard of a bald person with dandruff. If they did, you couldn't miss it! That covers a very large number of people.
-I've met lots of people with shoulder flakes, and I've often had dandruff in the past. But only then they (or I) had hair.
Q1: Does shaving hair make it grow back thicker?
Q2: Does shaving hair mean less with grow back?
A: The fact that both of these questions float around, each with people swearing by them, should make the answer obvious.
If shaving caused more hair growth, wouldn't women who've shaved for years have legs like gorillas and armpits like Chia Pets?
If shaving caused less hair growth, why do men still have to shave their faces every day?
There have been many scientific studies done on the topic (some as far back as 1923), and they found no difference in hair growth in relation to shaving.
The part of the hair you cut off are just dead cells outside of the skin surface. There is no change to the hair follicle under the skin, where the hair grows.
Studies on shaving & hair growth, all showing no change:
