A while ago I was talking to some co-workers about the problems I've had with my cell phone . I badly abuse them by frequently dropping them on concrete and in water. They suggested that it might me from my cheap holster - and my phone does pop out rather easily.

Another co-worker, knowing of my duct tape wallet, suggested that I make a duct tape version.

Pure Genious! Why didn't I think of that?

Behold! Plans for a Duct Tape Cell Phone Holster!

Construction is a melding of a belt holster for a Leatherman tool, and my revised Duct Tape wallet. Once again, my design goals were a balance of functionality and a clean minimalist look. I don't like the look of lots of seams and little pieces on the front.

This turned out to be a lot more work that the wallet to assemble, despite having fewer pieces. You can't just stack layers- you've got to fold and wrap around another object. That and you've got to deal with a magnetic clasp.

This design is built for a classic Motorola Razor, but can easily be adapted to any phone. If in doubt, make a paper template with clear tape to see how it fits. If you make a variation on this design, please send me a copy!

Just like last time, here's the Visio, PDF, and JPG versions. Pick your favorite - I recommend the PDF.

-PDF Version (31k)

I'm not 100% happy with this version - the belt loop is a little large for my taste. Stay tuned for an updated version.

-There is an easier design over on WikiHow, but that didn't do it for me in the minimalist look department. That and there's no belt loop or belt clip on that design.

-There's a cloth holster project that has a roughly similar structure over on Sewing.About.com. I consider it the estrogen equivelent of duct tape.
