Aug 31, 2007: Hunting the Elusive Pastor's Husband
We Pastor's Husbands seem to be hard to find. Try and do a web search for "Pastor's Husband" and odds are you won't get a bunch of blogging Pastor's Husbands - you'll get an old news story about a wife that went postal and killed her clergy husband. So how exactly do you hunt down a Pastor's Husband?
Before I start, I have to get something out of my system. It's Friday - bear with me here.
Be vewwy vewwy quiet... I'm hunting wabbits!
[opera music]Kill da wabbit! Kill da wabbit!
[crescendo] Kill da wabbit!!!
*ahem* OK. I feel better now.
I think part of the hunting problem is that by nature, most of us PH's have our own lives & jobs. We're not defined by what our wife does as a day job.
So far I've found a now-offline blog for "The Pastor's Husband", which inspired the name "PH2" over at Married To The Church. I guess I should be properly called PH3, since I'm late to the party. Other than us 2 active bloggers, I'm not finding much.
It's like looking for hard to find info on the web. Most people type in a straight question as their search. You'll get better results searching for the answer, not the question. (That's what you really want, right?) For example a search for "when is watermelon ready to harvest?" gives OK results. Searching for "harvesting watermelon" gives much better results.
An alternative is to go back a level. Don't search for the answer, search for where the answer can be found. Say I'm looking for Lunar Rover information. I know that NASA has that info, so I look for NASA- and start looking there.
Same goes for Pastor's Husbands. I'm having a hard time finding them. So if I can't find them, who can? How about the wife of a Pastor's Husband?
So I've been looking around web sites for women pastors. It's easy to find women pastors - there's literally hundreds of 'em over at RegGalsBlogPals. There's a ton of individual sites floating out there. Some real percentage of these ladies must be married. I figure there's got to be passing references to husbands and their web sites, blogs, etc. Not a ton of luck, but I feel like I'm making headway, since traffic at this site has been steadily growing. Maybe there's not much to be found at the moment.
Anyway, if any PH's are lurking out there, please let me know about any blogs, web sites, resources, and books (if such even exist!).
Side note: If you ever want to induce deep depression, troll around the pastor's wife web sites. Even I start to feel unappreciated, put upon, neglected, and alone. It's worse than country music...

Also, I think our roles are less clear, among ourselves and in our congregations/community.
I appreciate your blog and I promise to jump in when I have something to contribute.
Keep it up.
