Nov 28, 2008: Wax Cylinder Phonograph Christmas Music
Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's legal to play Christmas music. What, it wasn't illegal before? Well it should be!
If you haven't seen this already, this is worth your time if you're a connoisseur of Christmas Music.
There are several sources of Christmas music from the turn of the century (1900, not 2000) originally recorded on Edison Wax Cylinders. Because of the age of these recordings, there are no copyrights - so copy away guilt free.
It's interesting to see how songs we sing today have changed over the past 100 years- and to see how stable some our Chrismas traditions are.
Once you get there, "Right-Click, Save" to get them on your computer for later use.

Nov 26, 2008: Should I shave my head?
Q: Should I shave my head? What will I look like with a bald head?
A: If you're a guy, and don't have any huge scars, yes - go for it!
If you're still not sure, ask your barber/hair stylist. They'll know. Ask them if you've got a head that would look good shaved. Trust them- they looks at skulls all day long.
Q: What's a bald head feel like?
A: Feel your forehead. Hard & greasy, hu? A bald head is just like that, only all over.
Q: What's it fee like to have a shaved head?
A: Cold. Other observations in my previous post "11 Things I've Learned Since Shaving My Head"
You can also spot any breeze, and tell when it's raining faster than anyone else.

Nov 25, 2008: Our church's fault-tolerant prayer chain

Recently I discovered that our church's prayer chain has fault-tolerance built in, and closely resembles the Token Ring protocol (rest in peace, may it never return!).

Nov 15, 2008: Liberal and pro-abortion? Something to think about.
Estimated number of blacks of voting age eliminated by abortion by 2008:
7,524,000
Potential black votes lost by Democrats at 90% voting rate:
6,773,000
Al Gore’s margin in the popular vote in 2000:
+544,683
George W. Bush’s margin in the popular vote in 2004:
+3,012,499
Ergo: If it were not for the pro-abortion policies imposed on the black community by liberal activists, including black and Democratic leaders, both Al Gore and John Kerry would have won landslide victories in 2000 and 2004.

Nov 14, 2008: Human extinction, mass deaths, and morals

How could a geek not love reading a Risk Analysis paper with sections like:
-Humanity’s Life Expectancy
-Estimating the Near-Term Probability of Extinction
-The Cost Effectiveness of Reducing Extinction Risks from Asteroids
One thing I found interesting was the lengthy discussion over "discounting future generations". Put another way, is a life in the future worth the same as a life today? The author argues, with a lot of cited experts who agree with him, that a future life clearly must be held to the same value as a life today. To do otherwise leads to highly unethecial outcomes. I'd agree.
He also argues that not living is far worse than living, thus a life not existing in the future, when it could have, is bad and wrong. This is the basis for stating an human exinction is a very bad thing. Not only do a lot of people die, but many more people never get a chance to live.
I find it interesting how when talking about asteroid impacts, scientists and ethicists can come to a concensus on the value of life and lives in the future.
Now take out the terms "extenction level event", and "asteroid impacts" - and replace them with the word "abortion".
Ah, now suddenly we have a hot-button topic! We're still talking about future generations and the value of human life. Nothing in the basic facts have really changed. We're talking about killing 42 million people per year, every year. Since WWII, that's 1.5 billion people, world wide. Out of a global population of over 6 billion.

Oct 28, 2008: Church Blood Drive
There were 2 goals for this: helping out by giving blood, and to get greater visibility in the community.
Our church is downtown in a very non-church looking building. I've lost count of the number of people who say they've walked past the building repeatedly and never knew a church was there!
From the donation point of view, the blood drive was a huge success. Around 25 people gave blood, and we even turned away at least 5 people. I dropped by over the lunch hour, and the wait was long enough that I had to bail.
